McBee signs with UO By Don Hunt EAGLE POINT It isnt often that the University of Oregon wrestling team recruits someone who hasnt fared better than fifth at a high school state tournament, but the Ducks saw a budding star when they signed Chet McBee to a scholarship. McBee, a senior at Eagle Point High, signed a letter-of-intent with the Ducks on Wednesday. "Its not what Ive done in the past so much as what Im going to do in the future, because I have yet to put together a complete tournament," McBee said. The 145-pound McBee managed only a fifth-place finish at last years Class 4A state tournament. But he beat former Crater standout Justin Godley now a freshman with the Ducks and last years state champion at 145 at the district tournament and knocked off a couple of other wrestlers who signed Division I scholarships at a big tournament in Reno. Brad McBee, Chets father and the coach of the Eagle Point team, said the Ducks are banking on the younger McBee getting stronger physically. "Hes a skinny kid, a late-bloomer physically," Brad McKee said. "I think Oregon is looking where hes going to be when he 19 or 20 years old. "And I think they like his athleticism. Chet has beaten some of the best (high school) wrestlers in the country." Chet McBee posted a 37-7 record last year after moving to Eagle Point from Dodge City, Kansas. He was also being recruited by Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., but decided he didnt want to move 3,000 miles from home. As a freshman, McBee will have his tuition and books paid for, but not his room and board. Depending on how he performs, his scholarship money could increase.
