Andy Stein's Blue Four comes to town The Jackson County Community Concert Association hosts jazz quartet The Jackson County Community Concert Association is one of the Rogue Valley's best-kept secrets. The nonprofit has been bringing entertainment to the area for 67 years through its subscription series. Recently the organization decided to make tickets available for individual events. The first concert of this year's season will be the jazz stylings of Andy Stein's Blue Four, Thursday, Oct. 12. The performance will take place the night before the opening of the Medford Jazz Jubilee. Tickets cost $20. Stein, on vocals, violin and saxophone, will be joined by Matt Munisteri, guitarist, singer and songwriter; Scott Robinson, trumpet, alto clarinet, bass sax and more than a dozen other instruments; and Conal Fowkes, pianist and double-bassist. Andy Stein's Blue Four merges swing and chamber music. Within this combination of violin, guitar, piano, a reed player and no drums, everyone is in the rhythm section and everyone takes a turn as soloist, a chamber music tradition that dates back at least 300 years. The group's repertoire includes classic ballads and hot jazz of the 1920s and '30s along with more obscure compositions by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Don Redman, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Harry Warren, Joe Venuti, and others. Also included are a few original numbers Stein has composed in a period style. Advertisement Stein is an eclectic musician with a 35-year career spanning rock, country, jazz, and classical. He has performed concertos with orchestras across America, toured China with a string quartet, and recorded with Itzhak Perlman, Bob Dylan, Wynton Marsalis and Aretha Franklin. He won a Grammy award for Best Country Instrumental and wrote the score for an Oscar-winning cartoon. Besides scores for cartoons, documentaries and Hollywood feature films, Stein has composed an opera with Garrison Keillor and arranged for pops and symphony orchestras across the United States and in Europe. For 17 years, his violin and saxophone have been heard on NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion" with Keillor. Other concerts in the Jackson County Community Concert Association series include Time For Three, Nov. 16; Quintet of the Americas, Jan. 19; Phillip and Ellen Frohnmayer, baritone and soprano, Feb. 1; and Hector Olivera, organist (his second appearance in Medford), March 13.
