Schools' reading program starts training volunteers The SMART reading program will hold volunteer training sessions beginning this week in area elementary schools. SMART -- Start Making A Reader Today -- matches volunteer adult readers with children in kindergarten through third grade. Volunteers read to children for one hour each week during the school year. No formal experience is required to be a reading volunteer. The training sessions will be held at 3:15 p.m. today at Talent Elementary, 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at Jewett Elementary, 3 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Elementary, 3:15 p.m. Thursday at White City Elementary and Mountain View Elementary, 3:30 p.m. at Helman Elementary and 3 p.m. at Patrick Elementary. Sessions the following week will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at Jackson Elementary, 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at Glenn D. Hale Elementary, 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Washington Elementary, 5 p.m. Oct. 5 at Wilson Elementary, 5:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at Phoenix Elementary, 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at Central Point Elementary and 3:15 p.m. Oct. 7 at Orchard Hill Elementary. The final series of training sessions will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at Howard Elementary, 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at Roosevelt Elementary, 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Oak Grove Elementary, 2:45 p.m. Oct. 14 at Ruch Elementary and 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at Jefferson Elementary.
