Zakuri Scott Williams, 32, of the 7200 block of East Evans Creek Road, was indicted on a charge of first-degree criminal mischief for allegedly causing more than $1,000 damage to the Evans Valley Bible Church at 7924 E. Evans Creek Road. He also faces two counts of second-degree burglary for the April 6 incident. Williams has a pre-trial conference hearing scheduled for June 1 in Jackson County Circuit Court. Church secretary Ursula Hosler said Williams removed playground equipment and cut a rope swing and put them in the church sanctuary. He gathered the church's tech equipment and put it in tubs in the parking lot, but didn't take that equipment, she said. In addition to breaking a window, Hosler said Williams knocked files kept by a Sunday school teacher into a bathroom, broke file-storage tubs and threw church belongings around the building. "He's going through the church drunk and knocking over things," she said. After the rampage, Williams' wife came to the scene of the crime and said her husband had committed the burglary, according to a Jackson County Sheriff's Office affidavit. She led investigators back to their house near the church, and Williams was found asleep on the couch with the Bible cube, the affidavit said. Williams' wife said her husband had been intoxicated and was out walking around during the night. Williams was read his rights, confessed, apologized and returned the cube, the affidavit said. Hosler said the 60-member congregation isn't sure why Williams targeted their small, remote church north of the town of Rogue River. "In the whole community, people feel violated. Our Sunday school teacher felt very upset and violated," she said. "In the long run, we all feel for the man and are praying for him. We know he's hurting." In 2012, Williams pleaded guilty to a charge of identity theft in Jackson County Circuit Court in a case where he and a co-defendant used another person's identification and forged a check.
