The Black Tornado connected on just 25 percent of its shots but still found a way to push Sheldon to the brink in the Irish's 52-46 victory in Southwest Conference action. Sheldon (10-4 overall) improved to 4-0 in SWC play to remain tied with Roseburg for the league lead. North Medford fell to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in conference. The Tornado stayed afloat despite the poor shooting and serious foul trouble by collecting 17 offensive rebounds and hitting 22 of 28 from the free-throw line. The Irish went 23-for-33 at the line. Advertisement "It was nip-and-tuck the whole way," said North Medford coach Tim Karrick. "We shot 25 percent from the field — most of them were layins — and we still had an opportunity to win. "The girls played really hard tonight. We just had a frustrating night at the rim." Neither team led by more than four points throughout. Sheldon edged ahead by two points with about two minutes to play and North Medford was forced to foul to stop the clock. Both Megan Ross, who led the Tornado with 13 points, and Whitney Hodnett fouled out late in the contest for North. The Irish, which also battled foul trouble, took advantage by making 9 of 12 from the charity stripe in the final minutes of the contest. "They just made their free throws down the stretch," said Karrick. Lauren Berger had nine rebounds to lead North Medford, which outrebounded Sheldon 33-20. Kellie Satterfield contributed three of the Tornado's 10 steals. Theresa Brown led Sheldon with 14 points, while Katie Steigleman added 11. The Indians built a 47-16 lead after three quarters against winless South Medford (0-13, 0-4 SWC). Sheena Barkley had a team-high eight points for the Panthers. For Grants Pass (5-7, 0-4 SWC), Natasha Torgerson scored a game-high 17 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Eagle Point (0-14, 0-3) scored just one point in the opening quarter as the Vikings jumped out to a 16-1 lead. Senior forward Quenby Cox added 12 points for the Vikings. Taylor Hagy led Eagle Point with 10 points and nine rebounds. Mazama outrebounded the Eagles, 40-29.
