Christian Ryan Mitchell, 24, of Rogue River, remained in the Josephine County Jail without bail Thursday on a warrant for allegedly violating his probation. The device, described in a police news release as a hodgepodge of electronics equipment taped together with wires and a battery pack, has been disposed of by the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad and injured no one. "It definitely had the makings of an explosive device; it just didn't have the explosives themselves in there," said Lt. Dennis Ward of the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. "It very easily could have been an explosive device."  The department reported it received an anonymous tip Wednesday on Mitchell's whereabouts, as he had a felony warrant out for his arrest. Officers responded to the intersection of G and Grant streets and spotted Mitchell. When they confronted him to make an arrest, Mitchell told the officers he had a bomb in his fanny pack and that he meant to detonate it.  "After brief negotiations, Mitchell was taken into custody, and the fanny pack was dropped in some landscaping," the release says. Officers advised nearby homes and a business of the situation, though a sizable parking lot separated the device and those buildings. Ward said police blocked access to the parking lot and streets within a one-block radius, detouring G Street traffic.  "People couldn't get their cars (from the parking lot) for about an hour and a half," Ward said. The OSP Bomb Squad used a robot to remove the device, which was placed in a specialized trailer and transported to an "unpopulated area outside of city limits," where it was destroyed.  "Anymore, we consider ourselves lucky when we get away with something like that," Ward said.
