Our View: Ashland can't ease past travelers issue ... Letters to the editor: Oct. 28, 2015 ... SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: If it's not approved, it's landfilled Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 27, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 27, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News We thought we were doing right by sorting our recyclables into the appropriate bins ... including the co-mingle bin. Lately, we've heard the nasty rumor that it all goes into landfills anyway. True or false? Does Medford treat recyclables differently than Ashland? — Zuna J., via email Zuna, thanks for being an eco-conscious citizen, and thanks for giving us the opportunity to squelch that nasty rumor. You are “doing right” by recycling. In Oregon, waste management companies, such as Rogue Disposal & Recycling Inc., and Recology Ashland, are required by law to collect recyclables and see that they don’t end up in a landfill, explained Denise Barnes, Rogue Disposal’s recycling coordinator. “Even when markets are depressed, we have to store the material until we can deliver it to a sorting facility,” she said. “The only time we can legally landfill recyclables is if your (commingle bin) is so contaminated with unacceptable items, it is then in fact trash." However, because Rogue Disposal and Recology Ashland contract with different sorting facilities, something that might be an approved recyclable in Ashland may not be an approved recyclable in Medford — for example, aluminum foil. (Visit www.recologyashlandsanitaryservice.com and www.roguedisposal.com for a list of approved commingle items.) “The best thing to do to make sure you are supporting recycling is to be sure to put clean material in your recycle cart, and only material that is on the approved list of acceptable items for your area,” Barnes said. “No wishful recycling please! Contamination puts so much stress on the entire system.” Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
