Mail Tribune 100, March 4, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 4, 1916 MOST WELCOME NEWS The announcement that a beet sugar factory will be built in this section of the valley for the 1916 crop, contingent upon the securing of 5,000 acres of beets is most welcome news. It is now up to everybody to work for the desired acreage. One-half of it was secured in the previous sugar beet campaign. When it became apparent that the Oregon-Utah promoters had no intention of complying with their promise of locating their sugar factory where the greatest acreage of beets should be signed, and it was also evident that sufficient acreage could be secured in the region between Gold Hill and Ashland to support a sugar factory, work was begun. A syndicate was organized by capitalists for financing and constructing the factory is scheduled to be completely at New York Monday. Securing of beet seed threatened for a time to postpone the factory construction, but this difficulty has been surmounted and the necessary seed been obtained from abroad through assistance of diplomatic service, which secured the release of seed and the lifting of the British blockade to permit its shipment. Sufficient has been obtained for 7,000 acres. Beets grown here last year and samples of soil from every part of the valley have been analyzed by experts and submitted to the sugar manufacturers, with favorable results. This is naturally an excellent beet country and the logical site for a sugar factory. The extension of irrignation will make possible several factories. There is no reason why the Grants Pass factory should not prove a success — with Douglas county to draw upon for acreage, especially as the Utah promoters seem convinced of its superiority as a site. But there is no reason why this section should not grow beets for another locality, with a factory of its own available. It is now up to the southern portion of the valley to make good by producing the acreage.
