The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department reported anyone looking to get out into the woods can head to any state campground for free the weekend of June 6 and 7. The offer is a celebration of Oregon State Parks Day, an annual event established in 1997 to focus public attention on the state's park system. The agency said camping is free the night of June 6 at traditional sites with full hookups or electrical hookups and at tent sites. Yurts, cabins and teepees remain priced as normal. Parking will also be free both days at the 26 parks statewide that typically charge a day-use parking fee. There also will be hikes, open houses, tours and special barbecues offered at some parks. Anyone wanting to recreate down by the water will also be able to fish, crab and clam without a license that same weekend, a celebration of Oregon's Free Fishing Weekend. The event will be hosted by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife. ODFW will provide gear, bait and instructions at some of the parks, too. In Jackson County, head to the Civilian Conservation Corps shelter at Fish Lake between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, for a lesson.
