Barnstormer’s Storyteller Music Series showcases The Brothers Reed, Alice DiMicele, King Roy Wing and T Poe Vernado American band King Roy Wing. kingroywing.com Wednesday Mar 21, 2018 at 11:31 AM Mar 21, 2018 at 2:58 PM By Cheryl Pearsonfor the Mail Tribune A fixture on the Grants Pass entertainment scene, Barnstormers Theatre was founded in 1952 by Mike Spooner. The community theater produced plays in parks, schools and any other venue its organizers could find until 1961 when they purchased an old church at 112 N.E. Evelyn Ave. and converted it to a theater. With just one paid position, filled now by stage manager Wade Drake, any actors, directors, stage and technical crews or office help are volunteers who do what they do for the love of theater. In July 2017, Barnstormers started its Storytellers Music Series, presenting singers and songwriters playing original music in an intimate, all-acoustic setting and telling the stories behind those songs. Five new episodes of the music series are set for March, April, May and June. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at barnstormersgp.com or by calling 541-479-3557. Look for alternative-folk music duo The Brothers Reed on Friday, March 23. Siblings Aaron and Phil Reed started playing together as a duo several years ago, right after Phil moved from Missouri to join his brother Aaron in Ashland. The brothers share the same vocal range, and their harmonies stand out during their performances. As a guitar duo, their style is reminiscent of the finger-picking folk singers of the ‘60s and ‘70s. The also share the same penchant for bluegrass, rock, R&B and country and for comedic brotherly banter. The Brothers Reed released its third studio album, “Three,” in January. Singer and songwriter Alice DiMicele will perform Tuesday, April 24. As an acoustic guitar player, DiMicele performs what she calls “organic acoustic groove,” a combination of rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, jazz and blues. With 30 years in the music industry to her credit, she has independently released 14 albums, including this year’s “One With the Tide.” A New Jersey transplant, DiMicele has made Southern Oregon her home since 1986. King Roy Wing, an Americana-style, four-piece band from Ashland, will play Saturday, May 19. This fairly new music project includes singer and songwriter Michael Henry, upright bassist Jenica Smith, mandolin player Gaur Groover and violinist Hana Winters. Together they play Americana-style arrangments filled with three-part harmonies. King Roy Wing independently released its first album, “Peace of mind,” earlier this month. Finally, wordmaster T Poe Vernado will wrap up this series of shows with his original poetry backed by a group of regional musicians. Vernado is also know as The Rogue Poet and lives in Ashland. He is founder of the Rogue Poetry Slam, an annual poetry competition. Cheryl Pearson is a freelance writer who lives in Central Point. Reach her at [email protected]
