I counted them two or three times to make sure, and all of them are still alive. I know the average is about 5 goslings, but 18 struck me as unusual. I don't know how she could cover all those eggs. Is 18 a record? — Pat W., Ashland Well, Pat, that photograph of some of those 18 goslings being raised by the one Canada goose hen looks unusual to us at Since You Asked Central, as well. But when we pose your question to the migratory bird program coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, we were surprised to hear that your uber-goose is no record-breaking mother, just a hen with a heart of gold. "You don't see that all the time, but it's common enough," ODFW biologist Brandon Reishus says. "But they're not all hers." Sometimes geese will take temporary care of another hen's goslings, Reishus says. Reishus says that sometimes this is a permanent situation, which in the biological world is called "brood amalgamation." But we all know this is just a euphemism.
