Last-second field goal lifts Henley past Cascade Christian Sep 16, 2007 12:00 AM A A CENTRAL POINT — For the second straight year, Henley waited until the final minute to sneak past Cascade Christian in nonconference football. Only this time, it was the final seconds. The Hornets' Justin Chavarria kicked a 28-yard field goal with two seconds to play to lift Class 4A Henley to a 23-22 victory over the 3A Challengers at Dutch Meyer Stadium on Saturday. Cascade Christian led the majority of the contest but two turnovers proved costly. "Turnovers was the huge story," said Challengers' assistant coach Brandon Boice. "We had two and they didn't have any." Henley's Rockey Rosser plunged in for a 2-yard touchdown with 4:21 left in the contest to bring the Hornets within 22-20. Cascade Christian got the ball back but a fumble set up Henley at the Challengers 35-yard line. From there, the Hornets whittled down the clock and Chavarria made good on his kick. "We had a chance to put the game away but just didn't finish," said Boice, whose team lost to Henley 34-30 last season on a touchdown pass with 40 seconds left. "We get a first down and we win the game. Obviously we needed to move the ball, but the turnovers killed us." MARY'S 19, GLENDALE 12, OT — Tony LoMonaco scored from 8 yards out in the first overtime at Spiegelberg Stadium as St. Mary's won in overtime for the second straight week. The Crusaders had the opening possession in the extra period. LoMonaco's TD came on a blast play up the middle and Mark Reinele converted the extra-point kick as the Crusaders (3-0) took their first lead of the game. Glendale could not move the ball on their attempt. A strong St. Mary's rush forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to end the game. Brian Adesman paced the St. Mary's rushers with 129 yards.
