But surround Mazama’s all-state point guard with a talented cast, and the Vikings are formidable. Crater found out as much in its season-opening boys basketball game Tuesday, falling 71-50 to the Class 3A team regarded as one of the state’s best. Hesia, a senior point guard who was player of the year in the Skyline Conference last season, scored 32 points and left Comets coach Matt Meunier shaking his head in wonder. "I think we just played the best point guard we’ll see all year," Meunier said of the 5-foot-7 dynamo. "He totally dominates a high school basketball game. He’ll pull up and hit the 3, penetrate and finish or penetrate and kick. Just watching him in warm-ups is scary." Hesia led the state in scoring in 2001-02 at more than 28 points per game. Also for Mazama, Tyler Larson scored 12 points, Kyle Blank 10 and 6-foot-6 Eric Brosterhous nine. All three are returners from last year. The Vikings outrebounded Crater, 32-19. Colin Schoonover, a senior guard, scored 19 points and had five assists for the Comets, while Andrew Norum tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. MAZAMA (71) — Hesia 32, Blank 10, Holcomb 3, J. JV result — Crater won. CHURCHILL 75, NORTH MEDFORD 53 — At Eugene, Churchill used a 22-8 third-quarter spurt to open a 19-point cushion entering the fourth period in a season-opening win. Jesse Worcester’s 20 points paced the Lancers, who were 21-7 and lost to Grants Pass in the Class 4A state tournament’s fourth-place game last year. Junior post Ryan Lucas powered the Black Tornado (0-1) with 22 points and eight rebounds. He shot 8-for-14 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. Michael Bergenseng added 14 points for the Eagles, who attempted 21 more shots than Yreka. Nathan Hankle had seven assists, while Anderson grabbed nine boards and Tim Martinen had four steals. The Loggers shot just 4-of-14 from the foul line, while Phoenix JV nailed 3-of-4 in the second overtime to seal the win. Senior Isaac Stephenson had eight steals in the second half, while Tony Beals led Butte Falls with six rebounds.
