Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 12, 2006 Rogue River students learn strike lesson the hard way By SANNE SPECHT Mail Tribune How much strike information has been — or should be — shared between teachers and curious students has been disputed among district officials, teachers and parents. One parent at Monday’s lengthy negotiation session said she was upset the teachers had been wearing strike messages on buttons and ribbons to school. The woman declined to give her name, but said her elementary school-aged son was upset. "He asked me what was going to happen to his teacher — and to him," the parent said. "He asked, ‘Who’s going to teach me?’" she said. "And he shouldn’t have to be in the middle of this." Rogue River Elementary School teacher June Safko said the district told teachers to "give simple, age-appropriate explanations if the children ask." Advertisement Safko said she kept her statements to her kindergarten students age appropriate. "They are a little confused and afraid. ‘When are you going to come back?’ they ask," said Safko. "We just tell them we love them, and miss them and we’re sad to leave — but we’ll be back." Officials said the district’s four schools will remain closed to all but classified and administrative personnel during the duration of the strike.
