Cornelius John Meany Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Mar. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Cornelius John Meany, 84, passed away February 25, 2015 in his home in Phoenix, Ore. with his wife Betty by his side. Cornelius was born May 19, 1930 in San Francisco, Calif. to Cornelius and Elizabeth Meany. Due to his father's health issues, Cornelius began working at a very early age to support his family. At age 12 he was working on the docks in San Francisco, selling papers, and delivering groceries all while attending school and playing baseball. At age 17, he began playing professional baseball with The Pacific Coast League and The Far West League. At age 20, Cornelius joined the Air Force. He served November 1950 - November 1954 as a pararescue specialist (PJ) with the 46th Air Rescue squadron in Korea. October 21, 2012 Cornelius married Betty Meany in Ashland, Ore. Cornelius was a resident of Phoenix, Ore. since 2008. Prior to 2008 he lived in the Applegate area and northern Oregon towns. He also lived in the Bay Area and the Clear Lake areas in California. He lived in Florida for many years where he worked as a lineman for the telephone company until he retired in 1980. He married in Florida during his time in the Air Force and had three sons. After his retirement he moved back out to the Bay Area in California where he met and married Sue Foster. They spent much of their time traveling and being campground hosts with their RV. She passed away in 2012. His hobbies included cars, motorcycles, and woodworking. He loved animals, especially horses. He was involved with Knights of Columbus, a member of the Good Sam RV Club, and a previous Elks member. Cornelius is survived by his sons, Michael Meany, Eddie (Cindy) Meany and son of Jupiter, Fla., and James (Betsy) Meany and their son and daughter of West Palm Beach, Fla.; step-sons, Brandon, Eric, Matthew, Treven, and Joel of Oregon; former daughter-in-law, Jill Jalskey and her two sons (sons of Michael Meany) of Sisters, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews, many still live in the S.F. Bay Area. Cornelius was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Elizabeth Meany; sisters, Nora (Rudy) Fink, Franis (William "Boots") Greaves, Marian (Geno) Fanuchini, and Lorraine (Ken) Braband. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date with enternment of ashes at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
