RAIDER ROUNDUP McDermott earns 400th win in SOU's upset Comment By SOU Sports Information MailTribune.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Dec. 21, 2014 @ 12:01 am By SOU Sports Information Posted Dec. 21, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News ASHLAND — The 400th victory of Brian McDermott’s collegiate head-coaching career was also one of the biggest upsets in his 19 years of leading the Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team. One day shy of a year exactly since College of Idaho knocked off second-ranked SOU in Caldwell, Idaho, the 16th-ranked Raiders returned the favor Saturday night at Riehm Arena by downing the second-ranked Coyotes 77-74. The Raiders (13-2, 3-1 Cascade Conference) turned again to senior wing Tim Weber, who tallied 21 points, five assists and five rebounds a night after posting his third triple-double of the season in a 114-104 overtime win against Eastern Oregon. Weber went 8-for-11 from the floor, making four of five shots in the second half. C of I fell to 13-3 and 2-2 in the CCC. McDermott, who has 283 of those wins at SOU (and the previous 117 at Dakota State (S.D.)), last led the Raiders to an upset of the NAIA’s No. 2 team on Feb. 10, 2009 against Oregon Tech. Freshman guard Ben DeSaulnier came through with the biggest night of his young career: 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. He also sparked the key sequence of the game, coming off a screen to drill a 3-pointer from the right wing and give SOU a 72-69 lead with 3:13 remaining. Demetrius Perkins got in trouble near the sideline on College of Idaho’s ensuing possession. Joel Spear pried the ball away and threw it up court to DeSaulnier, who handed off to Tim Weber for a two-handed slam. Trailing 76-70 after a pair of Weber free throws, the Yotes gave themselves a chance thanks to Joey Nebeker’s four-point play with 2:19 left. They also got stops on SOU’s next two possessions but couldn’t take advantage. Spear made one of two free throws with six seconds left, putting SOU up by three, and Josh Wilson missed a 3-pointer as time expired. Four players scored in double figures for the Yotes: Perkins (17 points), Wilson (15), Sydney Donaldson (14) and Joey Nebeker (12). Wilson also had a game-high 12 rebounds. SOU’s bench outscored C of I’s, 27-7. Prior to DeSaulnier’s 3-pointer, the game had been tied at six different scores in the second half and the lead had changed hands seven times. The Yotes lost by the same score on Friday night at Oregon Tech. They hadn’t lost two straight since their first two games of the 2013-14 season. They’d also won three straight against the Raiders and 14 of 17 overall in the series. Last year at Riehm Arena, C of I came back to force overtime and ultimately won 109-100 in the second extra frame. The Raiders are 4-1 against ranked opponents this season. Jordan West chipped in 13 points and three rebounds, while Joel Spear had seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Women’s Basketball SOU 112, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 70 : At Ashland, the College of Idaho women’s basketball team had only surrendered 100 points three times in program history prior to Saturday night’s Cascade Conference game at Southern Oregon. The 15th-ranked Raiders got there with five minutes to spare in their romp over the Yotes at Riehm Arena, however, shooting a season-best 59.7 percent (42-for-73) from the floor and drilling 11 of their first 15 tries from 3-point range. SOU (12-1, 3-1 CCC) was led by 22 points from Kristen Schoenherr, who went a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor with three triples. Bree Park went 5-for-6 from downtown, Courtney West was 7-for-9 with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Alexi Smith totaled 17 points with a career-high nine assists and seven rebounds. College of Idaho (3-10, 2-2) was outscored 53-21 in the second half. The Yotes were led by Elisha Hensey’s 23 points, and Aleah Lowber added 10. SOU’s point total ended up being the fourth-highest in Raider history and the most C of I has ever conceded. It was also the largest margin of victory for either team in series history. The last time the Raiders shot a percentage that high was Nov. 2, 2014, when they hit at a 59.4-percent clip (38-for-64) against California Maritime. The Yotes — who had won 12 straight in the series against SOU until dropping the teams’ final meeting in 2013-14 — kept pace for one half thanks to 45.7-percent shooting overall and a 7-for-13 mark from outside. That percentage dipped to 24.2 percent in the second half. Raider wing Autumn Durand went 6-for-6 with all 14 of her points in the first half. SOU started the second half by scoring the first 10 points, starting with Schoenherr’s 3-pointer and Carly Meister’s 3-point play. That lead gradually gained steam as Park made all three of her 3-pointers, and Smith’s basket-and-one with 5:31 to play made it 101-62. The Raiders have hit the century mark three times this season. One big key to this occasion was their season-low turnover total of 13. They committed more than 20 turnovers in their previous four games. Park, a senior guard, is 15-for-24 from 3-point range in SOU’s last four games. She’s shooting 49.2 percent (32-for-65) out there on the season. They’ll be off now until Jan. 2 and third at Northwest Christian and Corban, the latter of which is the only remaining unbeaten team in the CCC.
