More mountain snow in Southern Oregon forecast Friday Jan 26, 2018 at 9:30 AM Jan 26, 2018 at 11:38 AM Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune @RyanPfeil More snow is expected in the mountains of southwestern Oregon tonight and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. A winter storm warning is in effect from 10 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Saturday in areas above 4,000 feet in the Southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. The warning extends from just south of Highway 140 near Brown Mountain and Mount McLoughlin northward, a National Weather Service bulletin said. A winter weather advisory was issued for areas north of Highway 66 and portions of the Siskiyous near Oregon Caves National Monument, the bulletin said. Up to 2 feet of new snow is expected for areas covered by the winter storm warning, and up to a foot in the advisory area. "Expect heavy, wet snow, especially as snow transitions to rain later Saturday morning," the bulletin said. Motorists traveling across mountain passes are urged to carry chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged cellphone. There is a slight chance of additional precipitation in southwest Oregon Tuesday, but drier conditions are expected to follow for at least a few days. "Generally it'll be a drying trend," meteorologist Michelle Cohen said. The Mt. Ashland Ski Area opened today for the first time this season after 14 inches of snow fell Wednesday night and Thursday, bringing the base depth to more than 2 feet.
