Did I miss that? And do school officials actually turn away unvaccinated kids that day or is the threat of having to find daycare or watch an educational video enough to convince parents to get their child vaccinated? — Taylor D., Medford Taylor, you didn’t miss it because those numbers weren’t available until last week. School and child care facilities are required to submit exclusion numbers by March 1, and it takes Jackson County Public Health a few days to compile that data and report out. On Feb. 17, Exclusion Day, 284 kids countywide were sent home until they could get the required vaccines or complete the process for claiming a medical or non-medical exemption, which includes either meeting with a health care provider or watching an educational video about immunizations, said Jackson Baures, Jackson County Public Health Division manager. Exclusion Day is not an empty threat. State law requires that kids attending public and private schools, preschools, Head Start or certified child care facilities provide documentation of their immunizations or exemption by the third Wednesday of February, Exclusion Day, or be sent home. There were 216 kids excluded in 2015, 334 in 2014 and 224 in 2013. Baures said this year’s increase may be partially due to Senate Bill 895, which was signed by Gov. Kate Brown last July and made all religious exemptions signed before March 1, 2014 invalid. (Last summer, there were 30,000 kids statewide with old religious exemptions.) This year, parents of children with an old religious exemption were required to either submit documentation of their child’s immunizations or complete the new process for claiming a non-medical exemption.
