CRIME Medford police investigating 'bizarre' shots-fired incident Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 4, 2014 at 3:40 PM Updated Dec 4, 2014 at 6:07 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 4, 2014 at 3:40 PM Updated Dec 4, 2014 at 6:07 PM » Social News Medford police are still trying to piece together a "bizarre" string of events from early Thursday that started with a report of gunfire and ended a short time later with a man slamming his car into another vehicle on Dakota Avenue. Officers first received word of shots fired at 12:27 a.m. in the 600 block of Dakota Avenue. They also received word of a man plowing his car into another vehicle on the street. "They basically happened very close in time," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. "Both scenes were very close to each other." Police found shell casings at the scene. Budreau said 47-year-old Robert Shelton, who lived in a home close to where those casings were found, came outside after hearing the shots. Investigators say Shelton saw another vehicle pulling away, jumped into his own and struck the other vehicle, thinking the driver had fired the shots. No one was hurt in the collision, police said. "We believe (he) heard the shots, went out to investigate, saw another car on the street and basically took matters into his own hands," Budreau said. Police said the driver of the vehicle Shelton ran into was not involved in the shots-fired incident and had just been dropping off a co-worker after a shift. Police said the pair did not witness any firearms being discharged. Police suspect Shelton was under the influence of a controlled substance at the time, but exactly what remains under investigation. Shelton was arrested on charges of driving while under the influence of intoxicants, hit and run, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, but was not listed in the Jackson County Jail Thursday. Police are still canvassing the neighborhood looking for additional shell casings and damage from the bullets. There have been no reports of injuries. Investigators declined to disclose the number of shell casings or caliber, as the investigation is still active. It's not yet known whether the suspect who fired the shots had been targeting a specific home, fired the shots at random or discharged the weapon into the air, police said.
