Benson (neé MacCallum), and Harold F. Benson, slipped peacefully into the arms of our heavenly father early evening December 23, 2015, with his wife, Denise, at his side. He was a 1958 graduate of West Rockford High School, attended Northern Illinois University and the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in Chicago with graduation in June 1965. At that time he was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the top 10% of dental graduates. Jim received a military commission and internship in the U.S. Public Health Service and reported for duty July 1, 1965, at the USPHS Hospital Seattle, WA. By 1968 he was transferred to the USPHS Hospital, Norfolk, VA, as Deputy Director of the Dental Clinic in charge of intern training. In 1970 he and his family returned to civilian life, moved to beautiful Ashland, OR, and began his 45-year private dental practice. Jim served as President of the Southern Oregon Dental Society, Kiwanis Club of Ashland, Southern Oregon Red Raider Athletic Association, a board member of the S.O.U. Foundation and Oregon Dental Service, an elder at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashland, and was elected into membership in the International College of Dentists in 1993. For the past seven years he was chosen by Dentistry Today as a leading dental educator. In 1990 he met and studied with Dr. Robert Lee of Loma Linda University. He began teaching with Dr. Lee and Dr. Charles Wold of Salem, OR, and OBI (Bioesthetic Dentistry) was born. Dr. Lee passed away in 1997, Dr. Wold retired in 2005, and Jim became President of OBI, teaching throughout the U.S. and setting up OBI Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico, South America-Chile, and Spain. He joyfully embraced teaching dentists in many countries. Jim is survived by his wife, Denise Louise Benson (neé Mayer); they married December 30, 1961. Daughter Barbara Ann Gentry predeceased him on September 29, 2015; he is also survived by his sons James Jr. and John and his son-in-law Greg Gentry. He was the proud grandfather of Alex Gentry, John, Jake, Jasmine, James, and Jordan Benson. A celebration of life will be held at Ashland Springs Hotel on January 22, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the J.R. Benson D.D.S.
