LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 27 MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 27, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Apr. 27, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> OSF should build theater Across the street from Lithia Park, there is a restaurant building for sale. It has no architectural or historical interest. My suggestion is that OSF buy the property, remove the existing structure and build a small, state-of-the art theater and outdoor open mic space for community use. The myriad and extensive benefits that OSF brings to the area are well-documented. However, for decades, various off-Shakespeare theater groups have brought quality theater to the community while struggling to survive economically. Many have disappeared for two related reasons: one, the inability to generate enough income to pay rent; and two, the scarcity of quality small theater space. Why can't the well-endowed OSF, as a service to the community, build such a theater and rent it out at a very low rate to different theater groups on a rotating basis? If the site across from Lithia Park is used for this purpose, it would advertise to all visitors the commitment of OSF to the arts and the community. Warren Carlson Medford Pick your disasters The Gordon DeVos letter April 19 posed a question. He listed four current disasters and used these events to ask a rhetorical fear-based question about biblical “last days.” I find it ironic that Mr. DeVos’s letter was published on the 20th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 167 people. Or how about 1968 with the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, the murders of MLK and RFK, the violent Democratic National Convention and the U.S. Navy commander of the Pueblo, his crew and ship held by North Korea. How about 1970-'72. Author Bryan Burrough documents in his book, “Days of Rage,” the FBI’s reporting of more than 2,500 bombings on U.S. soil during an 18-month period. The violent murders in the 1972 Olympics. Or in 1970, when the Ohio National Guard opened fire at Kent State University on American students, killing four and wounding others. I do not know if Mr. DeVos does not know history or is attempting a fear-based bait and switch that is common. The formula goes; First, paint a picture of hell. Second, offer your alternative. Three, pass the collection plate (a metaphor for money and/or action). Larry Slessler Medford Don't kill wildlife Recently the Jackson County Budget Committee approved the 2015-2016 budget. Sadly, and despite many letters, emails and personal comments in opposition, the committee continued to include funding — $61,002 in county funds and more in federal funds — to pay Wildlife Services. Wildlife Services killed 2.7 million animals in the U.S. in 2014, including 52 animals in Jackson County. Using horribly cruel methods like traps, snares, and even exploding cyanide canisters, their methods are indiscriminate — they’ve killed many endangered species and even people’s beloved pets. Wildlife Services is secretive, deceptive, and has been largely unregulated for decades. If you want to know more, watch the testimony of former employees and elected officials at  www.predatordefense.org/exposed . Wildlands, healthy ecosystems and wildlife need our protection and stewardship. Oregon has an opportunity to be a leader in conservation. Most Americans want wildlife — including predators — to thrive in the wild. It sickens me that the few dozen residents of our county who want wildlife killed in support of their self-interests managed to once again get the county to pay someone to do their dirty work and kill wildlife that “belongs” to all of us. Dee Perez Medford The role of a historian As an individual with an AB in history from U.C. Berkeley and an MA from the University of London who briefly taught Western civilization at De Anza Community College in California, I am appalled that the Medford District School Board approved the use of "American Pageant" for advanced placement history classes. History text books should be strictly neutral in their presentation of the past. They should be used as a tool for students to learn the facts of how their country evolved so that they can draw their own conclusions from what they have learned. Neither a textbook nor a teacher should editorialize on the past in light of their own political bent. The role of education is to teach students how to think for themselves, not to indoctrinate. Our founding fathers left copious writings about the formation of our country and its marvelous system of government that guarantees individual liberty and checks and balances that are meant to curb overreaching of power by any of the three branches. Students should be given the opportunity to study them and draw their own conclusions. The use of textbooks like "American Pageant" do nothing to promote the ideals of our forefathers so that young people today can have pride in their country an hope for a bright and shining future.
