He was born January 28, 1939, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Lester and Kathleen (Dockerty) Bullene. Born to poverty, Lester was the eldest of six children and soon became the breadwinner for his younger brothers, sisters, and mother. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1956 and after his discharge in 1959 attended college at night, after work. Lester earned two bachelor's degrees on the GI Bill from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, one in Mathematics and the other in Aerospace Engineering. From there, he pursued his passion in electronics and computers and soon became a renowned inventor. Lester possessed a genius-level IQ and was gifted in aerospace, computer technology, guidance systems, micro-chip engineering, medical inventions, and applied science. Among his more famous inventions are the final stages of the MRI, the fetal heart monitor, the microprocessor-controlled LORAN C (precursor to GPS), the electrical waveform generator, many military jet counter-measure systems, the Air Force One guidance system, and NASA's Space Shuttle guidance system. He held 35 U.S. patents and dozens of foreign patents. In 1976, at the young age of 37, Lester was nominated by his peers for the Nobel Prize in Science. A hard worker and creative inventor, he rose to the prestigious positions of Chief Scientist of Lockheed Martin Corporation and Principal Senior Engineer of BAE Systems. According to his fellow engineers, though, Lester's greatest gift was his friendly and down to earth manner. He was a dedicated husband and father, an avid sailor and pilot, and a man who loved life. Lester is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kate Brodeur of Rockwall, Texas; sons, Mark Brodeur of Rockwall, Texas, and David Brodeur of Eliot, Maine; daughter, Jennifer Pachico of Hudson, N.H.; brothers, James Wallace Brodeur and Robert Brodeur, both of Medford, Ore., and Donald Brodeur of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; sisters, Cathleen Cudd of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Michelle Latourette of Mesa, Ariz.; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Smith. The family will hold a memorial service to honor Lester this Spring on Martha's Vineyard Island, where he and his wife Kate enjoyed their first years of marriage.
