Phoenix puts a big scare into No. 2 Henley Hornets KLAMATH FALLS Phoenix had Henley on the ropes in Skyline Conference volleyball Tuesday, but the Pirates failed to finish off the second-ranked Hornets. Henley prevailed in the three-set match, 15-12, 12-15 and 15-9. In the decisive third game, Phoenix grabbed a 6-1 lead. "They had lots of momentum and had us reeling a bit," Henley coach Chuck Shannon said. The Hornets responded by pulling even at 7, before Phoenix surged ahead 9-7. "When things got real tight in the third game, our experience proved to be the difference," said Shannon. Senior middle Alice Meyers stepped up big for Henley. Meyers had a team-high 19 kills and seven stuff blocks. "She saved us," said Shannon. "She made big play after big play. When we had to have it, she got it done." Henley also profited from excellent serving, putting 71 of 72 in play. "They were extremely aggressive the whole night," said Shannon. "We didnt pass the ball real well, but a lot of that had to do with what they were doing. They were running lots of quick stuff both in the middle and on the outside." Sutton Jackson played a very effective match at the net for Phoenix, according to Shannon.
