Watershed map details Bear Creek A detailed new wall map of the 395-square-mile Bear Creek watershed and surrounding terrain is now available. The map, the recreation of more than 1,000 donated hours from various experts, covers everything from the Cascade/Siskiyou National Monument on the east to the stream�s confluence with the Rogue River at the base of the Table Rocks. "The map represents geographical relationships but it also represents collaborative relationships by people within the watershed," said Paul Kay, a member of the Bear Creek Watershed Education Partners, a coalition which helped produce the map. The map was created to show relationships between natural boundaries and those made by humans, he explained. The map is three feet wide by four feet long. About 2,200 copies of the map have been printed with some 600 distributed free of charge to local to schools within the watershed. Local government agencies and education/resotration groups also received the maps at no cost. The maps can also be purchased at three local businesses, including Northwest Nature Shop in Ashland, Neilson Research Group in Medford and Pacific Survey Supply in Medford. A paper copy costs $25 while a laminated copy sells for $45. All the proceeds from the sales are being given to the BCWEP. The group�s goal mision is to work with local youth, communities and public agencies to help protect, enhance and maintain the watershed. The idea for the map originated with Allan Cartograohy of Medford, creator of Raven Maps, and KenCairn Environmental Design. Southern Oregon University geography student Dan Shaw donated more than 500 hours to making the map. Nearly two dozen other individuals and agencies also assisted in the 18-month-long project. The map has been dedicated to the late community and environmental activist Mark Prevo, Kay said.
