PUBLIC SAFETY Medford apartment fire burns itself out by the time crews arrive By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Dec. 18, 2015 @ 10:25 am Updated at 10:28 AM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Dec. 18, 2015 @ 10:25 am Updated at 10:28 AM » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> A fire burned up part of an apartment early Friday, but firefighters didn't have to use much water as the flames already had snuffed themselves out by the time crews arrived. The fire was reported at 3:59 a.m. in the 200 block of North Ivy Street, according to emergency dispatch logs. Medford Fire-Rescue battalion chief Ken Goodson said four engines responded to the scene and found smoke venting from a downstairs apartment. Crews found flames burning on a wall near the apartment kitchen area and a lounge chair. But the flames had tempered somewhat, mostly burning out on their own as they had run out of oxygen. "We get those occasionally," Goodson said. "It's not uncommon, but I'm surprised nobody in the area noticed. It must have been really tight. Not a lot of smoke must have seeped out. "That was kind of the unusual aspect of this; that no one noticed it sooner." Firefighters extinguished the remaining flames and vented the remaining smoke. The blaze scorched parts of the wall and caused smoke damage throughout the one-bedroom apartment, though an estimated dollar amount was not available. Crews were on scene for about 30 minutes. The resident was not home at the time. The cause remained under investigation, though fire officials don't believe it is suspicious in nature. "Early indications aren't that way, but that could change based on the investigator's investigation," Goodson said. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
