Today in the News: U.S. drone strike accidentally kills 2 hostages Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 23, 2015 at 3:00 PM Posted Apr. 23, 2015 at 3:00 PM » Social News NEWS TO KNOW A U.S. drone strike targeting an al Qaeda compound in Pakistan in January accidentally killed two hostages, President Barack Obama announced earlier today. The hostages who died in the counterterrorism effort were an American and an Italian, the president confirmed. Both Warren Weinstein and Giovanni Lo Porto had been held by al Qaeda for years, U.S. officials said. An American-born al Qaeda operative, Adam Gadahn, also died in the drone strike. QUOTE OF NOTE "Today marks the end of a two-and-a-half-year ordeal," former CIA director David Petraeus said earlier today outside the Charlotte federal courthouse following his sentencing. "I now look forward to moving on with the next phase of my life." Petraeus was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay a $100,000 fine for sharing classified information with Paula Broadwell, his former mistress and biographer. Petraeus stepped down from his role as CIA director in 2012. MUST-SEE VIDEO: Kitten found in house-fire ashes A tiny tabby kitten was found by Kentucky firefighters combing through the wreckage of an apartment fire. Firefighters were looking through the wreckage days after the complex burned when the came across the soot-covered orange kitten. Rescuers dubbed the kitten Miracle, and said they are working with city officials to reunite the cat with its owners.
