The Pirates edged favored North Bend, 222.5 points to 218.5, after the Bulldogs’ leading 200-yard freestyle relay team was disqualified. Had it won the race, North Bend would have taken the meet. St. Mary’s placed fifth and Cascade Christian ninth. In the girls meet, North Bend won with 379 points. Phoenix placed fifth and St. Mary's 10th. Event winners qualified for the state meet Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. Wild cards will fill out spots at state. The senior Shepherd repeated as champion in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, setting a record in the former. He also was part of the record-setting 200 medley relay team that placed second and the runner-up 200 free relay. Shepherd’s 50 free time of 22.39 seconds broke Justin Heath’s 2005 record of 22.41. Shepherd and North Bend’s Jerrad Perez-Duncan had a rare tie in the event; judges ruled Shepherd would receive the higher seed at state. Shepherd’s time in the 100 free was 51.13 seconds. In the 200 medley relay, St. Mary’s quartet of Jasper Zhu, Scott Younker, Caleb Ringger and Chris Ball won in 1:48.76. The Pirates were next in their record time of 1:49.63.
