Woman charged for spitting blood in deputy's eyes By Vickie Aldous Dec 05, 2016 12:00 AM A A A Medford woman is facing charges after allegedly spitting blood into a deputy's eyes at the Jackson County Jail. Melissa Jonelle Jones-Hanscom, 40, of the 2200 block of East Main Street, entered not guilty pleas Monday to a felony charge of aggravated harassment against the deputy, plus misdemeanor charges of fourth-degree assault and harassment for allegedly punching a man earlier in the day. Jones-Hanscom was originally arrested in the early-morning hours of Oct. 25 after a man reported she hit him in the face with her closed fist at Oberon's Restaurant & Bar in Ashland, according to an affidavit. An Ashland police officer observed the left side of the man's face was swollen beneath his eye, the affidavit said. Jones-Hanscom was taken to the Jackson County Jail in Medford. She had blood on her face from a cut on her nose, according to a second affidavit. After being fingerprinted, Jones-Hanscom turned and spit blood into a deputy's face. The deputy's eyes immediately became irritated, and the deputy was taken to a hospital to be checked and treated, the affidavit said. Blood and saliva can carry a variety of diseases. Jones-Hanscom was released from jail after a relative posted a $750 security deposit, according to court records. She has a pre-trial conference hearing scheduled for Jan. 9, 2017, in Jackson County Circuit Court. Jones-Hanscom's past convictions include driving under the influence of intoxicants three times, refusing to take a test for intoxicants twice, driving with a suspended license twice, resisting arrest, reckless driving and interfering with a peace, parole or probation officer, according to court records. — Reach staff reporter Vickie Aldous at 541-776-4486 or [email protected] .
