A team won’t make the 14-game journey unscathed. Ashland did it in 2002, but Roseburg made sure North Medford wouldn’t repeat the feat, cruising past the last unbeaten, 28-26, 25-18, 25-15 on Thursday at North Medford High. Two days after dropping a grueling, five-game match to Ashland, the Indians bounced back with a victory over previously unbeaten North. The No. 8 Indians countered with the jump serve of Emily Waldron, and the tide swung for the remainder of the match. "We were really controlling the flow of the game," said North coach Ron Beick. "Waldron’s kind of their primary server, and she really got us off balance." Waldron closed the deficit to 8-7 and the lead changed hands several times until the Indians closed out the game. "That was unbelievable," Indians coach Bruce Myers said of Waldron’s service run. "Especially doing it right in front of (North’s) crowd." Roseburg went right back on the attack, garnering a 5-1 lead in Game 2 and not seriously threatened the rest of the game. "We were disappointed in how we came out in Game 2 after a tough loss," said Beick. "We have to work on competing after losing a tight one. "The coaching staff has to take responsibility for that." In Game 3, the Indians jumped to an early lead and held off a North rally that trimmed the margin to 18-15. "You’ve got to give these kids credit," Myers said. "We go to Ashland on Tuesday and lose in five games, then come right back here to North in a hostile environment and play like champs." Jessica Walters led the Tornado with eight kills and six digs, while Stephanie Jensen added six kills, two aces and seven digs. Jenna Siebenlist contributed five digs and a pair of kills. Waldron led the Roseburg charge with 16 kills, while Katie Fuller added 12 and Nora Burmeister four kills and six stuff blocks. "We’ve got the mind-set that this conference race will be a close one," said Beick. "We’d like to win all our home games, but obviously Roseburg was ready to go tonight."
