Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Child killed in wreck Three-vehicle accident on Highway 140 claims life of White City girl; others injured By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A 4-year-old White City girl was killed Friday in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 140 and Kershaw Road. Samantha Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene after the 1999 Ford Expedition in which she was a passenger pulled into the path of a dump truck traveling eastbound on Highway 140, Oregon State Police said. The Expedition’s driver, Ann L. Miller, 50, of Eagle Point attempted to make a left turn from Kershaw Road onto the highway, when her car was struck on the driver’s side by a 2001 Western Star dump truck, police said. The driver of the truck, William Coyne, 51, of Jacksonville was unable to avoid the collision. The dump truck knocked the Expedition into the eastbound lane, where it was then struck by a motor home driven by Mark R. Little, 52, of Imperial Beach, Calif., OSP said. The motor home and the Expedition came to rest on the highway. The dump truck careened off the road and turned over, OSP said. Advertisement All the drivers and occupants were wearing seat belts, or secured in child seats, police said. Miller was taken by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, where she remained late Friday in serious condition. The Expedition’s two other passengers, James Guzman, 6, and Amanda Guzman, 28, both of White City, also were taken by a Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center where they remained late Friday in stable condition. Little and his passenger in the motor home, Colleen E. Thompson, 53, of Imperial Beach, Calif., also were taken by a Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center where they remained late Friday in stable condition, OSP said. Coyne escaped the dump truck by climbing out of the passenger side window and jumping to the ground, witnesses said. He was taken to RVMC, where he was treated and released. OSP was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and crews from Fire District 4 the Oregon Department of Transportation. The highway was closed for more than 90 minutes, then opened with intermittent delays, police said. Traffic was backed up for about a mile before troopers could set up flaggers. Eastbound lanes were blocked until after the area was cleared. OSP personnel and the Central Point Police Department are investigating the accident. Chris Wood of Roseburg was watching her son play baseball in the Medford Sports Park on Kershaw Road when she heard the collision on the highway. "It scared us when it happened.
