Cheers — to wildland firefighter Joshua Kirkman, whose quick actions at the scene of a fast-moving fire helped keep the flames from spreading until Fire District 3 crews arrived. Kirkman was driving by the Central Point home where the fire started, and told his fiancee to pull over when he saw smoke and didn't yet hear sirens. After making sure everyone was out of the home, he used a garden hose on the flames coming from the house and from an RV parked outside. Cheers — to the debut of the Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market in its new home in the remodeled Hawthorne Park. A steady stream of customers showed up Thursday on a warm, sunny day for the first market of the season. The new setup allows vendors to spread out more than the former site at the Medford Armory. Parking is tight, but with Medford Center across the street and a second lot at the south end of the park, there should be plenty of spaces for everyone. Cheers — to Rogue Valley ski coach Gary King and 50 parent volunteers for bringing the state high school ski racing championships to the Mt. Ashland Ski Area for the first time in nine years. The races wrap up today. The event brought 500 skiers, parents and fans to the area, a boost for the local economy. Cheers — to the latest graduates of Jackson County's drug court program, which offers addicts facing criminal charges an alternative to jail time. Those who successfully complete the rigorous program under the supervision of Judge Patricia Crain can have some charges dismissed and probation time cut short. Success means weekly court appearances, passing regular drug tests, completing drug treatment, finding work, paying fines and assessments and facing the victims of their crimes.
