LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Dec. 17 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Dec. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News The terror we must fight Having escaped Hitler's invasion of Austria, I have always wondered how the people of Germany and Austria could believe a person like Hitler and follow his sick and destructive rhetoric. But I see it happening here with those people who are elevating Donald Trump. Trump, like Hitler, shouts out his statements loudly and promises to "fix things" but with no program to fix them. He has vilified an "enemy" — all the Muslim and Hispanic immigrants who have come to this country and says if we get rid of them, all will be well. His rants and raves are lies with no relationship to the facts but only designed to rouse the crowds to cheers because the crowd, like the people were in Germany, are hurting and angry and frightened about their lives. I never thought this could happen in the United States, but here it is. This is the terror we need to fight against, not the few sick and disturbed people we mistakenly allow to purchase guns. Traute Moore Talent An embarrassing situation I am watching the TV and CNN just "broke" the news that one of the terrorist shooters in San Bernardino may have been "radicalized." Wow! Really? Why is Vladimir Putin so much more serious about fighting terrorism than our own president and our mainstream media? As an American I think this is a very embarrassing situation. Al-Qaida and ISIS are on the loose but Obama and neoconservative Republicans like Sean Hannity still have this pathetic desire to remove Assad in Syria. I'm sorry, but this is where I think a lot of the current problem started in the first place. Western meddling in Syria and Libya created this Frankenstein monster. Donald Trump is right when he says we should leave it up to Russia and France to wipe out ISIS in Syria. I certainly do not trust Obama on this matter. Joe Thomas Brookings Complicit in attacks The rash of terrorist-style attacks in the United States is not some inexplicable phenomenon. Society has always harbored a myriad number of disaffected and dysfunctional individuals eager to rebel against “the system.” Some of them scheme and dream of the day when they exact revenge on a society they believe has discarded them. The precipitating factor in these attacks is today’s easy access (thanks to the NRA) to pistols and rifles with high-capacity magazines. Such weapons satisfy their “get even” urges by enabling them to spray 600-1,200 RPM (rounds per minute) into crowds of people they consider “enemies.” That no individual running for our highest office has the moral courage to take on the NRA and call for a total ban on the sale of these weapons is indicative of cowardice. In lieu of effective action our cynical bought-and-paid for Congress offers nothing but phony prayers and condolences to the families of victims. ( “Just wait, it’ll all blow over in a month or two.”) By re-electing these proven hacks to office 95 percent of the time, our own complicity in these grisly massacres cannot be denied. Question: After Roseburg, will Medford be next?
