This year I considered buying a Golf TDI, thinking it wouldn’t add to the global warming problem. Car testing organizations have given the car high marks. Wrong! Their subterfuge was greater than GM’s, in that GM probably was trying to hide the fact their ignition switch design was proving defective. But the problem was big enough that they had to do something about it. However, VW/Audi knew up front that their turbo-diesel was too dirty to meet emission standards but decided to market it anyway. How? Add a device whose sole purpose is to provide false readings during emissions tests. There is no integrity in that decision and several company people had to know about it; engineering, for one. Which means, I’ll never buy a VW or Audi. Hartley Anderson Medford Addyi has risks As a pharmacist and longtime supporter of women’s health issues, I feel compelled to speak out against Addyi the new drug that was recently approved by the FDA to treat women with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD. Addyi is being hyped as the “Female Viagra.” Addyi was rejected twice by the FDA as an antidepressant because of side effects and ineffectiveness. The manufacturer then switched tactics and mounted a public relations campaign pressuring the FDA with public opinion using “gender equality” arguments claiming that men have Viagra, so women should also have a drug to improve sexual satisfaction. This drug is basically just another antidepressant. There are serious potential side effects such as a sudden drop in blood pressure and possible fainting. The drug carries a black box warning that it should not be used with alcohol. Plus, Addyi is not very effective. Women taking Addyi experience 0.8 (less than one) more “satisfying sexual events” per month compared to placebo controls. Addyi will probably cause side effects and harm millions of women. Ross Pelton Ashland Takes your breath away Doesn’t it take your breath away that at the same time clearance is given to build the Jordan Cove natural gas pipeline, regional media are saturated with warnings and urging preparation for “The Big One” earthquake, arguably likely and overdue, and possibly, as a New Yorker article put it, wiping out everything west of Interstate 5? One sees flatland pipelines clearly from the air, but I don’t recall seeing one built under a forest canopy over rugged mountains just in time to be shattered by a predicted natural disaster. I suppose our EPA and DEQ will have a tough time prosecuting negligent damage from a Canadian firm (clever!) but at that point prosecution would be the least of our worries. Besides, along with some great residents, our mountains shelter most sources of our clean water, great forest cover for mischief, and drunken hunters, angry extremists, meth labs, and some who own startling personal collections of firearms. I’ll try not to say “I told you so” if this pipeline gets shot full of holes by someone who had a few nips and is convinced they can take on unwelcome intruders with two Bud Lites a cellar full of assault rifles.
