Boy dies of injuries; driver jailed on charges A 5-year-old Grants Pass boy died Tuesday from injuries he suffered when he was struck by a car while walking on a beach along the Rogue River. Justin Michael Perez was flown to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, but was pronounced dead at 5:45 a.m., a hospital spokesman said. Cindy Jo Wells, 41, of Grants Pass, the driver of the car, was charged with first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants and three counts of recklessly endangering, according to the Jackson County sheriff's office. She was lodged at the Jackson County Jail and held on $200,000 bail. About 6 p.m. Monday, Justin and his stepfather, Glen Campbell of Grants Pass, were walking a dog along a sand bar at the recreation area about a quarter mile from Savage Rapids Dam. Wells was driving a silver 1988 Honda Civic with her two young sons south along Rogue River Highway toward Rogue River. Her car went off the road, crossed both traffic lanes and down an embankment. The car rolled down the embankment and struck Campbell and his stepson before landing upside down in a small pool of water on a sand bar. Wells and her 10-year-old and 6-year-old sons riding with her were unhurt. Campbell was treated for cuts and bruises. Jackson County sheriff's Sgt. Terry Wilson said the case would go before a Jackson County grand jury this week. Mail Tribune Copyright   The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, Oregon USA
