http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend July 8, 2006 Debit card fraud hits $200,000 By chris conrad Mail Tribune The source of nearly $200,000 in bank account thefts has been narrowed to the debit processing service for Dollar Tree stores throughout the Rogue Valley, police said. Investigators found that all 200 victims had used their debit cards at Dollar Tree stores between May 1 and June 10, Ashland police Detective Bon Stewart said in a news release. The majority had shopped at the Ashland Dollar Tree at 1668 Ashland Street, Stewart said. "The thefts occurred somewhere in the middle ground between the point of sale and the bank," Medford police Lt. Tim George said. "The victims' debit card information was intercepted as it was collected by a third-party vendor who accounts for the information before sending it to a bank." The information was being used by someone in Southern California to make withdrawals of hundreds of dollars on each account. Victims have reported losing up to $4,000 in one day, Stewart said. Many, though, are reimbursed by their banks. The thefts have affected customers from a variety of banks and one credit union, including Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Key Bank and Benton County Schools Credit Union. Most victims said withdrawals of a few hundred dollars were made between one and four times a day. Area agencies are working closely with Los Angeles detectives and the FBI. The ATMs used to make the withdrawals are located in and around Torrence and Monrovia, Calif., police said. The FBI has asked victims to visit the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov to enter their information. This will aid the agency in tracking the crime.
