The Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo kicked off at the Jackson County Expo Center Friday night with a full schedule of excitement. There is also a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event in the Cow Palace in San Francisco. With just a little over a month left on the schedule to try and qualify for the National Finals Rodeo, PRCA members are scrambling to make as much money in as short of time as possible. The Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo, which has 31 nationally ranked competitors scheduled to participate, could be a real turning point for those on the bubble. The top 15 competitors in each event in the Jack Daniels World Standings will qualify for the NFR in Las Vegas. I'm headed to California tonight where I'll fly out in the morning and go to Kansas City. Then I'm back to San Francisco for a go at the Cow Palace on Sunday, said cowboy Jeff Chapman, of Athens, Texas, who posted the top calf roping time of 8.0 seconds Friday. I have to win, win, win. I'm hoping this (score) will hold up, but I won't find out until later. In fact, most of Friday night's competitors were out the door and down the road, unaware of how they would fare until the final events are run Sunday. Each cowboy and cowgirl gets one go. It either holds up or it doesn't. Fifth-ranked Justin Andrade from Livermore, Calif., rode a hard-spinning bull called Easy Money to an 86 and the first-day lead in the bull riding. Easy Money jumped from the gate and went into a hard left spin. Andrade, who is headed to the NFR, settled in over his rope hand, found the groove and made the ride that put him in the lead. These bulls are on tour, just like we are. I saw this bull in a Southern California rodeo three weeks ago, and he was outstanding, Andrade said. I like them to (spin) either way, but it's a lot more fun when they kick. This bull was a little flat, so it makes them a little harder to ride. Jason Legler, of Eaton, Colo., is ranked second in the world standings and was scheduled to ride, but he didn't make the trip to Oregon. But Peter Randle of Houston made good use of a hard-bucking bull called Freak Show, posting an 82 on the first ride of the section. Randle is currently second and James Morgan, from Burlington, Wyo., is third with a score of 81. The saddle bronc riding had four nationally ranked cowboys in the nine-man field. Eighteenth-ranked Todd Fike of Pavillion, Wyo., rode a hard-bucking horse called Las Vegas to the top score of the night, 74. A lot of what happens is the luck of the draw, and this horse was just a little better than the rest, said Fike, who has been an NFR regular the past several years. Shane Moran, from Dillon, Mont., came into the Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo as the 16th-ranked rider in the world. He posted a 73 on Young & Restless and is currently second. Dustin Flundra of Pincher Creek, Ala., is sitting third at 72. Cody Jessee of John Day entered Friday night's action ranked 10th in the bareback world standings. He did himself some good, riding Mr. Blue to a score of 77 and the lead. It's been a good year, said Jessee, who has made & 36;62,000 so far this year. It's not exactly riding at home here, but it's nice to be back in Oregon this time of the year. I've never been to the NFR, so I'm excited about the way it's going. Larry Sandvick, of Belle Fourche, S.D., is currently second with a score of 76, and Tommy Goodwin is sitting third after the first day at 68. In the steer wrestling, Randy Suhn from Riverton, Wyo., put down his steer in 3.8 seconds to take the lead. I'll tell ya what, in a small place like this, you either get it done right away or not at all, Suhn said with a laugh. Jason Miller from Lance Creek, Wyo. is just a fraction back at 3.9, and Brad Bleason, of Touchet, Wash., is sitting third with a time of 4.2 seconds. Sixteenth-ranked Chad Masters from Adams, Tenn. and Michael Jones of Stephenville, Texas took the lead in the team roping with a time of 5.2 seconds. Chapman is the leading calf roper with a time of 8.0. Johnny Sloan from Ellenburg, Wash., has won on the Columbia River Circuit this year and is currently second in Central Point with a time of 8.7. Barrel racer Tona Wright from Moriarty, N.M. has won over & 36;35,000 so far this year. She made her pitch to win the Wild Rogue event with a 13.43-second run to top the leaderboard.
