The Challengers probably don’t belong in the upper half of the District 6 standings, but after Saturday’s 1-0 overtime victory over Phoenix, they find themselves tied for second place with a 5-2 record. Junior striker Sarah Brown took a well-placed through pass from senior center midfielder Whitney Winters and blasted the ball into the left corner of the net from 15 yards out in the sixth minute of overtime to propel the Challengers to their biggest win of the season. Phoenix is also 5-2. "Sarah ran between their two deep backs, got position and took a nice shot that went just inside the left post," Cascade Christian coach Craig Warren said. Advertisement The Challengers lost two of their better players in the off-season when leading scorer Katie O’Brien tore her ACL and goalkeeper Erica Cornwell transferred to Hidden Valley. But Brown has emerged as a force on offense — her nine goals lead District 6 — and junior Katie Stieglitz has played superbly in goal. Stieglitz posted 12 saves Saturday. "They had a couple of free kicks from 20 yards out that she (Stieglitz) punched over the bar," Warren said. "Katie was huge." The Challengers have also gotten outstanding play from senior sweeper Jessica Urton. Saturday’s match marked the third straight overtime contest for Cascade Christian. "We’re a team that has overachieved," Warren said. "We’re inexperienced in certain positions, we often don’t have good touch on the ball and we’re not very fast. But we have a really good back line, and the girls play hard the whole time." Phoenix was led by junior midfielder Ema Burr, who played the entire 86 minutes. NORTH VALLEY 2, ST. MARY’S 1 — Emily Morehouse blasted home a goal from close range to break a 1-1 tie and lift District 6 leading North Valley to the victory at Spiegelberg Stadium. The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Shelsea Rawson scored off a pass from Maddie Murdoch. North Valley’s Shea Miller dribbled through three defenders and connected in the 32nd minute to tie the match. Midfielders Erin Chamberlain and Renee Huizinga both had strong outings for St. Mary’s (3-3), while Cybill Torres played a strong match at sweeper for the Knights (6-0). HIDDEN VALLEY 2, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Murphy, Denise Powell and Kayla Flick scored for Hidden Valley in the District 6 match. Powell tallied on a misdirection shot at the 21st minute after taking a diagonal pass through the middle from Catherine Dole. Flick made a fine turnaround shot from 8 yards at the 48th minute, helping improve Hidden Valley to 4-2. SOC ROSEBURG 1, NORTH MEDFORD 0 — At Roseburg, defensive stopper Val Groshong broke up a scoreless tie in the 62nd minute as Roseburg handed North Medford its first loss. The Indians, who last beat North in 2000, improved to 5-1 and moved into a second-place tie with the Black Tornado in the SOC. Groshong’s blast from 35 yards out nailed the crossbar and landed just inside the line before bounding away. The Black Tornado (5-1) held a healthy advantage in shots but couldn’t cash in with the equalizer. SOUTH MEDFORD 3, CRATER 2, Shootout — At Central Point, unbeaten South Medford handed 1-5 Crater its second loss on penalty shots, hitting all four of its attempts in the extra session as the Comets made one of four. South (6-0) led 2-0 at halftime, but Crater rallied in the second half, then played the Panthers to a scoreless standoff in overtime. Kelsey Corbin’s 20-yard shot into the top right corner of the net put South up 1-0 seven minutes in. Shane Coker then took a Alanna Stevens pass and scored at the 24th minute. Andi Bagden rallied the Comets in the second half, hitting a 25-yard free kick at 54 minutes and making a corner cross to Rachael Smith, who headed it in for the tying goal at the 69th minute. South lost senior goalkeeper Bethany Stousland to an injured shoulder. She’s expected to miss at least a week of play. ASHLAND 9, EAGLE POINT 2 — At Eagle Point, sophomore striker Hannah Sohl had four goals and one assist and junior midfielder Jamie Roupp added three goals and four assists to fuel Ashland (2-4 SOC) to the rout. Junior strikers Audrey Wilson and Kyra Norton added one goal apiece for the Grizzlies. Melissa Bronkhorst and Elisha Rasor connected for Eagle Point (0-6), which trailed 7-1 at halftime. GRANTS PASS 3, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Grants Pass got two goals from Sheila Lindquist in the Southern Oregon Conference win. Lindquist tallied once in each half — giving the Cavers a 1-0 intermission lead — and Megan Cardiff emerged from a crowd in front of the net for GP’s other goal. The Cavers (3-3) led in shots, 18-9, and KU had a 9-6 edge in keeper saves.
