St. Mary's contingent heads stars The St. Mary's volleyball team capped an outstanding season by having Maren Zielony named most valuable player and James Joy coach of the year in Southern Cascade League all-star voting. They led the Crusaders to a state runner-up finish. Zielony was joined on the first team by her sister, Kristen. Cascade Christian also placed a player on the first team in senior Christine McCandless. "Maren was our team leader this year," said Joy of his 5-foot-6 senior. "She was injured for about three weeks of the season but still went to all of the practices and encouraged her teammates. She was like having another coach on the floor, always knowing when to make adjustments if they were needed." Junior Kristen Zielony was one of four underclassmen for the Crusaders to receive all-league mention. "She (Kristen) was about 4 to 5 inches shorter than the other players she was going up against at the net," said Joy. "She was just such a great blocker and loves that aspect of the game." Bonanza also had two first-teamers in Krista Nieraeth and Aaliyah Young. Also making the squad was Lost River's Kendra Houge. St. Mary's also had two second-team members in Lani Brophy and Megan Dode along with Kim Hansen, who received honorable mention. Shelly Nicholson of Cascade Christian was on the second team.
