News briefs Rescuers find man lost on deer hunt A missing hunter was found Monday morning in the Pickett Creek Road area of Josephine County where he disappeared on Saturday. Danny Ray Hanson, 34, of Grants Pass, was in good condition, said Josephine County sheriff's deputies. Hanson, who is an avid outdoorsman and hunter, got lost and spent two nights in the forest. Search and rescue teams began searching after Hanson was reported missing while deer hunting. The Grove will move to Ashland temporarily ASHLAND -- Community Works has announced that The Grove, its family resource center program, will temporarily move to Ashland while construction is completed on the facility at 1195 E. Main St., Medford. Each Friday beginning Nov. 5, activities for third- to fifth-graders will run from 3 to 6 p.m. and activities for 11- through 17-year-olds will run from 7 to 10 p.m. at Ashland Middle School, 100 Walker Ave. For a calendar of events, call Debbie Wilson at Community Works, 779-2393, Ext. 215. Red Cross still needs donations of O blood A critical shortage has passed, but the American Red Cross continues to need donations of A positive, O positive and O negative blood. Community members will have three opportunities this week to donate in Medford: 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today, the Blood Donor Center, 48 Hawthorne St.; 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, KDRV-TV, 1090 Knutson Ave.; 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, a special Halloween blood drive, Blood Donor Center. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 105 pounds and be in good health. For eligibility questions or to schedule an appointment, call 773-3813. Free snowmobile safety class set for Nov. 15-16 The Rogue Snowmobilers will present a free snowmobile safety certification class for people 8 and older from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 15-16, at the Roosevelt Elementary School Cafeteria, 112 Lindley St., Medford. Persons operating a snowmobile must have either a current driver's license or a snowmobile safety certificate. Preregistration is required. To register and arrange to pick up study books, call 772-8718. Study books should be picked up at least a week in advance. Children should be accompanied by at least one parent. Ashland hospital offers CPR class this Saturday ASHLAND -- Ashland Community Hospital will offer an American Heart Association CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) class for community members and health-care providers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, in the hospital conference room. The training includes CPR for adults, children and infants as well as emergency care for choking. Cost is $25. To register, call Lori Lind at 482-2441, ext. 258. Pre- nursing reception will be Tuesday, Nov. 9 ASHLAND -- The faculty and staff of Oregon Health Sciences University School of Nursing at Southern Oregon University plan to hold their annual pre-nursing reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, in the Stevenson Union Redford Lounge at SOU. The reception will include a brief presentation on the application process, prerequisites, financial aid and scholarships. Reservations are required by Nov. 5 and may be made by calling 552-6226. Corinne Stubson heads local arts council board Corinne Stubson of Medford has been named president of the Arts Council of Southern Oregon's board of directors. She was formerly president of the Rogue Valley Symphony's board. The new vice president is Amy Richard of Ashland. Sharon Schaefer of Medford is the new secretary. ACSO, now in its 24th season, is a nonprofit organization supporting artists, arts groups and arts education in Jackson and Josephine counties. Essay contest winners to be honored Friday The award ceremony and reception for the students, family members and teachers involved in the Third Grade Red Ribbon Essay Contest will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Carpenter Room at Rogue Valley Medical Center, 2825 Barnett Road, Medford. Selected students will be given the opportunity to read their essays aloud. They will receive a Certificate of Achievement and a Southern Oregon Drug Awareness T-shirt. Classes from 12 local elementary schools have submitted entries. The theme this year is, "Take a Stand: Living a Safe and Healthy Life." Red Ribbon Week, sponsored locally by Southern Oregon Drug Awareness, is one of many activities designed to raise awareness of alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues and solutions.
