I have noticed debris that is clearly not recyclable material hanging out of these recycle trash cans in my neighborhood. The trash company empties them just the same. Does someone really sort through all of this so-called recyclable rubbish once it gets to the transfer station? Wouldn't that be very tedious and costly? The question of what really happens to stuff in commingled recycling bins comes across the Since You Asked desk with some regularity. Dahna in Ashland wondered the same thing just last November. Waste disposal companies always reassure us that the recyclables end up in the right place thanks to big recycling firms in the Willamette Valley that have giant assembly-line gear with conveyer belts, magnets, shakers and mechanical fingers to separate the materials. Rogue Disposal ships commingled recycling to a Clackamas facility, KB Recycling, a division of Weyerhaeuser. Ashland Sanitary sends its mixed recyclables to SP Recycling Corp., also in Clackamas. Still, debris that is clearly not recyclable shouldn't go in the recycling bin. It is more costly to remove and could even prevent a load of otherwise recyclable material from being reused appropriately, officials said.
