St. Mary's begins with win at state tournament EUGENE -- Fourth-ranked St. Mary's found holes in Enterprise's defense and rolled to a 15-4, 15-11 win Thursday as play began in the Class 2A state volleyball tourney. The Southern Cascade League champion Crusaders advanced to today's quarterfinals at Lane Community College. They face Oakridge at 11 today. Win or lose, St. Mary's then plays again at 7 p.m. "It doesn't get any easier from here on out," St. Mary's coach James Joy said. "Oakridge won the Trico League and they are tall, block well and serve tough." He added that the Crusaders are ready for the challenge. "We're peaking at the right time," Joy said. "(Thursday's) match was one of our best of the season." Enterprise hit and blocked well, said Joy, but its defense was weaker than St. Mary's -- something the Crusaders had been working on. "I thought our offenses would equal out," Joy said, "so it would come down to defense." The Crusaders had just six passing errors and three serving errors. "We passed very well," Joy said. "They didn't get too many kills on us. The kids were reading the ball well and anticipating well." The Crusaders recorded nine serving aces in the match. Kristen Zielony was 12-of-13 from the serving line, recording serving with three aces. She added five kills and four digs. "The whole team served tough today, with Kristen being key," Joy said. "She had a solid day for us." Her sister, Maren, had 10 kills and 11 digs. Becky Naumes, who also served three aces, added nine kills and eight digs. Setter Crystal Galedrige had 24 assists for the Crusaders. Southern Cascade League runner-up Bonanza dropped a 15-13, 15-4 decision to Regis.
