Tom McGuire, 61, will lead the 1,100-student school. He initially applied for the principal position at Table Rock Elementary School but was encouraged to seek the high school position. “I’ve never been a high school principal before, but I taught at the high school level,” said McGuire. He hopes to inspire development of relationships that will lead to learning. Many people recall a significant teacher who made a difference in their life, he said. “Positive relationships foster real learning. Someone outside the family must connect with them,” said McGuire. “If you don’t have a relationship it just doesn’t happen.” Two challenges will have his attention. The first will be getting students ready for college. The second is understanding how the role of poverty can hold kids back, said McGuire. “You have to be socially just to deal with kids,” he said. McGuire’s well-rounded educational experience and work in professional development were attractive to the district, said Superintendent Cynda Rickert. “Because it’s a very complex job, there are a lot of pieces and parts,” said Rickert. “To be able to find someone like Tom with a very deep educational background is great for Eagle Point.” McGuire and eight teachers from EPHS spent a week in Denver recently learning a program they will implement designed to get students who have 2.0 to 3.0 grade point averages prepared for college. A Nike School Innovation Fund grant pays for Eagle Point to participate in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program. McGuire was most recently with The Myrin Foundation’s Educate the Whole Child initiative as co-director of school and professional development. From 2009 to 2014 he was superintendent of the Monroe, N.H., Consolidated School District, which served 600 students in three schools. New Hampshire’s Department of Education named the district's elementary school as the state’s Elementary School of the Year in 2013. McGuire was an associate professor of education in principal preparation and elementary education at Keene State College, N.H., from 2000 to 2008. He’s was an elementary school principal for five years in Vermont and for a year in New Hampshire. From 1990 to 1995 McGuire taught English and history at Thayer High School, Winchester, N.H. He taught sixth- to eighth-grade English and social studies at two schools from 1978 to 1990. McGuire has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Keene State and a bachelor’s degree in education and history from Stony Brook University in New York. Former Principal Paul Cataldo retired after more than 30 years in education, Rickert said. McGuire has been a frequent visitor to Oregon and the West Coast on vacations. “It’s like Vermont, only warmer,” McGuire said of Oregon. One of his adult daughters will relocate to Portland in September, he said. The new principal plans to enjoy camping and riding his 1970s BMW motorcycle in what should be a longer season than the Northeast affords.
