It seems shorter, not to mention worse for the wear. Are all the elementary tracks shorter? — Rachel L., Medford Washington Elementary's track, like the rest of the elementary school tracks in Medford, is not the standard 400-meter, eight-lane track. Only the tracks at North and South Medford high schools meet this criteria, said Medford’s Chief Operations Officer Brad Earl in an email. “Even the track at Spiegelburg Stadium is merely a six-lane track," he said. "And while it is the appropriate length for high school competitions, it does not have enough lanes for a high school track meet. We use it for middle school track meets.” Twelve of the 14 elementary schools in the district have tracks, and all were paid for by fundraising done by parent teacher organizations (PTOs) or as part of a student’s senior project, Earl said. They are intended for students’ “active time” and for community walkers like yourself, Rachel. These tracks range in length from 184 meters (Oak Grove Elementary) to 403 meters (Abraham Lincoln Elementary). Washington Elementary’s track is about 302 meters, said Ron Havniear, the district’s support services/facilities manager. “The elementary tracks are random sizes based on what could fit on that specific school’s footprint,” Havniear said, adding that the elementary track surfaces vary from asphalt to decomposed granite or, in Hoover Elementary’s case, rubber. Years ago, the district posted the lengths of the elementary tracks but has since gone away from that practice, Earl said. Roosevelt Elementary is currently fundraising for a track, and Oak Grove Elementary is fundraising for an asphalt surface, Havniear said.
