The top three finishers at each weight class advance to the Class 6A state tournament Feb. 26-27 at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum. North Medford had No. 2 seeds and No. 4 seeds, respectively, earn quarterfinal wins at three weights in Tanner Ulrey and Chase Mitchell at 106 pounds; Thomas Hamilton and Robert Biddle at 132; and Cole Hornbrook and Nicholas Winetrout at 160. Top seeds Henry Cox (113) and Wyatt Westfall (170) were joined by No. 2 seeds Luke Mackey (138) and Justin Geyer (182) in earning convincing quarterfinal wins. Also advancing were No. 3 seeds Louis Dix (145) and Joshua Robbins (195), fourth-seeded Julian Stone (285) and No. 5 seeds Anthony Neuenschwander (120) and Dominic Deitrick (126). South Medford’s TJ Roberts, seeded fourth at 145, was the lone Panther to reach today’s championship semifinals. CLASS 3A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3: Cascade Christian advanced four wrestlers in Ryan Vidlak (106), Max Valle (120), Gunnar Thompson (126) and Moses Jackson (285) into today’s semifinal round at Cascade Christian High. Valle and Thompson each earned first-period pins in their quarterfinal matches, while Vidlak scored a second-period pin and Jackson advanced with a bye. Rogue River’s Johnny Hulseman (106), first-round pin, and Makai Jacob (120), granted a bye, also advanced to the championship semifinals. The top four wrestlers at each weight qualify for the Class 3A state tournament Feb. 26-27 in Portland. Swimming SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE DISTRICT: At Springfield, North Medford had five swimmers and South Medford had four qualify for today’s finals at Willamalane pool. North Medford’s qualifiers were sophomore Claire Ebert (100 back), freshman Gabby Parks (100 fly), sophomore Jordan Edwards (50 free), freshman William Anderson (100 breast) and senior Sam Watkins (100 free). For South Medford, qualifiers were senior JohnHenry Gaffney (50 free), junior Garrett Grossman (200 free), junior Garrison Einck (100 breast) and senior Julia Miller (500 free). MIDWESTERN LEAGUE DISTRICT: At Springfield, Ashland's Kate Page was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1 minute, 10.95 seconds) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:09.62) during Midwestern League preliminary action at Willamalane Swim Center. Finals are today. Other local Class 5A highlights from the day included second place by the Grizzlies' Emma Kahn in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.17) and a third in the same event by teammate Rose Eschtruth Harrison (1:28.04). Ashland's Olivia McMonagle captured third in the 100 back (1:11.82) and teammate Bekkah Higgins was third in the 200 individual medley (2:37.54). CLASS 4A/3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 4: At North Bend, Phoenix’s Ethan Shepherd won the 100 yard freestyle in 51.07 and the 50 free (22.77) during preliminaries. Finals are today. St. Mary’s Chris Ball was second in the 100 free (53.75). In other boys races, Cascade Christian’s Christian Scaglione was fastest in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.81). The Pirates’ 200 medley relay squad was first (1:51.55), and the Crusaders came in second (1:51.89). Phoenix’s Eddie Stewart placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:03), and St. Mary’s Jasper Zhu was second in the 100 backstroke (1:02.54) and third in the 500 free (5:21.68). The Crusader boys took second in the 400 free relay (3:39.60) and the Pirates were third in the 200 free relay (1:38.62). On the girls side, Phoenix’s Lauren Speaks placed second in the 100 breast (1:13.65) and was third in the 200 IM (2:30.29). Teammate Emily Samudio earned second in the 100 fly (1:06.29), and the Pirates’ 200 medley relay was third (2:09.26).
