I guess it is pride, a desire not to bother others or just an unwillingness to accept that you need help. Sometimes help is needed and sometimes others just have to step up and do unto others as they would do for us in different circumstances. Tom Brady needs our help. He isn’t asking for help, but it is obvious he needs it. He stands accused of maybe knowing that footballs he used were possibly softer than normal during the AFC championship game, giving the Patriots an unfair advantage and allowing the team to eke out a nail-biting 45-7 win. For his possible crime against football, he is facing a four-week sentence in the NFL’s equivalent to the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction — his house. While others are out on the fields of glory, gleefully getting slammed to the ground, shoved out of bounds, kneed, gouged and knocked in the head, he will be home, locked away in his personal super max, pacing back and forth, waiting to be set free. Tom is football’s Jean Valjean from “Les Misérables,” pursued relentlessly by the NFL’s Inspector Javerts, including Roger “Chief Inspector Javert” Goodell, who has appointed himself to hear Tom’s appeal. It is unbelievable. We need to free Tom Brady. Repeat: We need to free Tom Brady! It is our rallying cry, but we should go beyond slogans. We need to turn our outrage into action, holding Free Tom Brady 5Ks, GoFundMe 4 Brady campaigns, or possibly chaining ourselves together on the 50-yard line of Gillette Stadium, blocking play until security guards drag us away. I think all of us, except a few pundits who feel the need to be contrary, and jealous people from petty places like New York City, feel that outrage and believe that something should be done. And really it is the NFL’s fault. I realized that fact earlier this week when I was driving home from work. Passing through Sterling, I noticed a trouble light on in my car. I immediately thought of Tom Brady. The light looks like an upside-down ohms sign or the letter U. I have learned it goes on when my car’s tire pressure is too soft. It is very helpful. I see the light, ignore it for a few weeks and then adjust the air pressure. The NFL could use that simple technology. This is the world of wearable electronics. Quarterbacks have little computers on their arms. Apple has even created a thing called a watch that you wear on your wrist to allow you to check the time without looking at your telephone. Soon we will all have little computer chips controlling our brains. Why can’t referees wear lights that turn on when football pressure is low? If they did, we wouldn’t have this mess. We wouldn’t have to free Tom Brady. Contact Worcester (Mass.) Telegram & Gazette columnist George Barnes at [email protected].
