Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 25, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 25, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 25, 1915 Editorial: PUNISH ALL THE CASHIER SWINDLERS The Portland newspapers are filled with holy indignation over the swindle perpetrated by the United States Cashier company of Portland, by which the public was muleted to the tune of a million and half dollars, and as a result of which, after a six weeks' trial, six officials of the concern have been convicted for using the mails to defraud, with a maximum punishment of two years' imprisonment. By good behavior, the prison term will be shortened to about eighteen months each, or 108 months' incarceration for stealing $1,500,000, an average reward of $13,975 for each month in prison. Men have been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for stealing a loaf of bread, and on the other hand, men who stole several hundred millions in wrecking the New Haven and Rock Island railroad systems are not punished at all — yet we prate about the equality before the law. It is not the feature of inadequate punishment, however, which arouses the Portland newspapers. Nor does it seem to be the audacity of the swindlers in working the age-old gold brick game under their noses. It seems rather to be the fact that the bunko artists were not smooth enough to get away with it without being caught. As a matter of fact, every Portland newspaper aided and abetted the swindle, indeed, were the main agents in its promotion, and it was mainly through the Portland newspapers that the fraud was successfully worked. Without the newspaper campaign, the great success that crowned the efforts of the wild-catters in separating the gullible from their hard-earned savings would have been impossible. Every one of these virtuous oracles that now raises its voice in righteous wrath against the Cashier company eagerly sought its business and made special rates to lend its columns to become a party to the deception of the public. Every paper carried its full-page glaring announcements of a fabulous fortune for the suckers. Each sheet printed the false statements in prominent position and lent its influence to cheat its readers. A little investigation would have established the fact that the Cashier company was conceived in iniquity and conducted as a fake. Inquiry at the patent office would have shown the company had no patents.
