In establishing a cohesive national strategy for alternative proteins, the
benefits extend far beyond mere government support. It serves to unify
the ecosystem, empowering stakeholders to speak a common language
and collaborate effectively on shared challenges, thereby driving
impactful change.

Institute Israel
Recognizing the nation’s intrinsic constraints:
Even with these attributes, there are inherent
limitations. Among them is identifying local supply-
chain gaps. The Israeli alternative proteins industry
faces challenges arising from the relatively small
and geographically constrained local market.
These factors pose obstacles to widespread
industry adoption, necessitating tailored
interventions. Additionally, budget constraints,
especially when compared to larger economies
such as the US and China, and the absence of major food and pharmaceutical conglomerates
in the local market further limit the support
available. Bilateral and multilateral cooperation
among countries with different advantages along
the supply chain may help overcome these
constraints — one example is the collaboration
between the US and Israel through the BIRD
Foundation,28 which facilitates connections and
funds cooperation between Israeli start-ups, which
provide technology, and US companies, which
offer production capacities.
