By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings August 28. 2015 2:00AM SOU men's soccer team improves to 2-0 with first-ever comeback win The Southern Oregon men's soccer team followed Wednesday's program- and season-opening win with another team first — its first-ever comeback victory. Freshman Brendan Allen scored two goals as the Raiders overcame an early one-goal deficit to defeat Menlo College 3-1 in nonconference action at Belmont, Calif., on Thursday on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur University. A day after sideswiping Sierra Nevada 10-1 Southern Oregon fell behind 1-0 when Robert Cowan connected in the 23rd minute, but SOU responded by nailing each of its three shots on goal, including Allen's unassisted equalizer in the 27th. Diego Buenrostro scored off an assist by Kirk Bassett to put the Raiders ahead for good in the 65th, and Allen added an insurance goal three minutes later off an assist by Seigo Hall. The Raiders (2-0) got off 57 shots against Sierra Nevada but were held to six against Menlo (1-1), which won 10 games last season and finished 9-3 in the California Pacific Conference. Southern Oregon keeper Tyler Luebbert had eight saves against Menlo, which fired 14 shots. The Raiders have two more nonconference games next week at William Jessup and Pacific Union before their Cascade Conference opener Sept. 11 at College of Idaho. SOU scored five goals in the first half in Wednesday's memorable opener. Ahmon Afenegus, Dakota Marquez and Johnnie Workman scored two goals apiece in the rout.  Women's Basketball Southern Oregon first-year women's basketball coach Alex Carlson has added five new recruits to his first Raider team, the school announced Thursday. Joining the Raiders will be true freshmen posts Courtney Setzer from Crater High and Emily Peters from Prairie High in Vancouver, Wash., as well as sophomore transfer guard Toria Bradford (Clackamas Community College), senior guard Jehiah Cook (Nevada Las Vegas) and junior forward Sydney Mullings (South Mountain CC). The 6-foot Setzer was the Midwestern League player of the year and a first-team all-state selection. She averaged 17.4 points, nine rebounds, three steals and 1.9 blocks as a senior. "I'm excited to have such a quality local player," Carlson said. "There's a ton of good basketball around here and we want to continue to recruit locally, so I'm glad coach (Lynn) Kennedy got her early. She's kind of a throwback player in that you can't really put your finger on what she does so well but she ends up in the right place and knows how to play. She's been coached very well and that goes a long way." The Raiders went 27-5 last season and advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. They return senior guard Ashley Claussen, senior post Carly Meister and junior wing Autumn Durand but lost all-conference seniors Kristen Schoenherr and Alexi Smith as well as sophomore post Courtney West, who has transferred to Portland State. "It's a talented group of returners but we're going to play a little faster this year so we kind of wanted to upgrade in athleticism, and this group fits what we're looking to do," Carlson said.
