--> --> DEQ issues final decision on rail yard Ashland Daily Tidings The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has issued its final decision on the contamination cleanup to be conducted on the Union Pacific Railroad rail yard site in Ashland. The site - on 20 acres of land across the railroad tracks parallel to A Street - was found in the early 1990s to be contaminated with metals and petroleum compounds from the former rail yard operations. Environmental sampling of both the soil and surface water showed contamination. It had been operated as a locomotive maintenance, service, and railcar repair facility between 1887 and 1986. In a legal document called the Record of Decision, the DEQ outlines the process of removing contamination through excavation of coil containing contaminants above acceptable residential cleanup levels. The Record of Decision and related project documents are available for review at the public document repository at the Ashland Public Library, or at the DEQ Eugene office, 1102 Lincoln St., Suite 210. In 1993, Union Pacific signed an agreement with DEQ to investigate the contamination at the sited and study alternatives for cleanup. Public input on the cleanup was taken by DEQ, which then released the Record of Decision, calling for the contaminated soil to be disposed of off-site, and buildings and other surface features of the former rail yard operations will be removed.
