Repair work is underway, but it is not possible to determine at this time when the tunnel will be repaired and reopened. The Yreka Western Railroad has been severely affected by the loss of more than 60 percent of its freight revenue due to the tunnel closure. In the past, Yreka Western freight revenue has been used to support the operational costs of the Blue Goose Steam Excursion Train. However, until freight operations resume, operation of the Blue Goose for the 2004 season is canceled. Steam locomotive No. 19 did not run during the 2003 season due to mandated Federal Railroad Administration requirements for upgraded boiler standards. It is estimated the costs to meet the new mandates will be $150,000 or more, depending what additional work, if any, is deemed necessary.
